19-inch rack servers by form factor / height unit

Our 19-inch rack servers are available in different height units (HE). The height unit is a standardized unit of measurement for rack servers and corresponds to 44.45 mm or 1.75 inches. Depending on the number of height units, our servers offer different advantages, which we will give you a brief overview of here.

Frequently asked questions about rack servers

A rack server is a server with a standardized 19-inch design that is mounted horizontally in a rack. The height is specified in height units (HU), whereby 1 HU corresponds to exactly 44.45 mm. This arrangement enables a space-saving and organized installation of several servers on top of each other, which is particularly advantageous in data centers and server rooms.
The main difference lies in the design: rack servers are flat and horizontally aligned for installation in 19-inch cabinets, while tower servers stand vertically and are built like conventional desktop PCs. Rack servers are better suited to environments with multiple servers, as they are more space-saving and allow centralized management. Tower servers, on the other hand, are ideal for small companies or offices that only need one or a few servers and do not have a network cabinet.
This depends on the size of the rack and the height units of the servers. A standard rack usually has 42 U. Theoretically, 42 servers with 1 U each, 21 servers with 2 U each or 10 servers with 4 U each fit in. In practice, however, the number is often smaller, as space is required for switches, patch panels, power distributors and cable management. Sufficient space for air circulation should also be planned between the servers.
The power consumption of a rack server can vary greatly depending on the configuration, number of components and load. A typical 1U rack server in idle mode consumes around 100-200 watts, under full load it can be 300-500 watts. More powerful 2U or 4U systems with several processors, hard disks or GPUs can consume 800-1500 watts or more under load.
Rack servers have integrated fans that draw cool air from the front through the housing and expel warm air to the rear. This so-called "front-to-back" airflow is standard in professional systems. In server enclosures, this airflow is supported by a hot aisle/cold aisle arrangement in which the front (cold aisle) and rear (hot aisle) sides of the racks face each other. Server rooms should also be equipped with appropriate air conditioning. The ideal operating temperature is between 18-27 °C.
