What does a UPS system do?

The purpose of a UPS system (uninterruptible power supply) is to protect electronic devices and IT systems from power failures, voltage fluctuations and other faults in the power grid. It ensures the operation of critical systems if the regular power supply fails or becomes unstable.

In the event of a power failure, the UPS emergency power supply kicks in immediately and continues to supply connected devices with power from their battery without any noticeable interruption.
The UPS frequency stabilization compensates for peaks, undervoltages or frequency deviations that could damage electronic components or cause malfunctions.
The UPS gives you time to shut down servers in an orderly manner or run automatic scripts for data backup before the battery life ends.
By protecting against overvoltage, short circuits or mains noise, the UPS protects your hardware from defects in the long term.
What is the difference between line-interactive UPS and online double-conversion UPS?

Line-interactive UPS

The line-interactive UPS is a common solution for smaller server environments, network devices and workstations. It normally works in bypass mode, i.e. the power from the socket is passed directly to the connected devices. Only when a problem occurs, such as a power failure or a significant voltage fluctuation, does the UPS switch to battery operation. This usually happens within 2 to 4 milliseconds.

A major advantage of this type is the high energy efficiency in normal operation, as the battery is only activated when required. Line-interactive systems are also cheaper and require less maintenance. However, they only offer limited protection: they are effective against minor network faults, but their protection is not sufficient for particularly sensitive technology or in critical infrastructures.

Online double conversion UPS

The online UPSalso known as a double conversion UPS, offers the highest level of safety and power quality. Here, the incoming current is continuously converted twice by an internal process: first from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) to charge the battery, and then back to alternating current, which is then output to the connected devices. This ensures an absolutely stable, uninterrupted power supply - without any changeover time.

Even in the event of voltage dips, frequency deviations, overvoltage or mains noise, the online UPS delivers consistently clean power. It is therefore the best choice for critical IT systems, medical devices, industrial plants and data centers where even minimal interruptions cannot be tolerated.
