Industrial servers and industrial PCs

The perfect addition to your server

From food and metal processing to automotive manufacturing - every industry uses machines and robots to produce various goods. These robots need to be controlled, which is why special industrial PCs are used. The hardware used in industry is reliable, hard-wearing and versatile. Industrial servers are optimally protected against environmental influences and can also be individually configured. We will explain the advantages and differences of the servers and which industrial PC solution from Thomas-Krenn is suitable for you.

These are industrial PCs
An industrial PC (IPC) or industrial server is a specially developed computer designed for operation in industrial environments where conventional computers reach their limits. These robust systems are primarily used in factories, production facilities and automation systems, where they have to work reliably under difficult conditions such as extreme temperatures, moisture, dirt or strong vibrations. Due to finely structured production and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), industrial servers and industrial PCs must be able to do even more and be more versatile than ever before.
Industrial servers are required for machine and robot control, they are used to visualize production data or to monitor production processes. The requirements vary depending on the industry: from compact systems to powerful 19-inch rackmount servers or panel PCs. The degree of protection required against challenging environmental factors depends on the place of use – in some cases, certification according to IP protection classes is required, in others it can be dispensed with in order to save costs. You can find the right system for your individual requirements in our online store.

The advantages of industrial PCs

Industrial PCs and industrial servers should be able to withstand adverse conditions in production and at the same time perform well. This is why they differ from regular servers in the following ways:

  • Resilience and reliability: Whether high temperatures, humidity or electromagnetic interference - industrial PCs are resistant and their housing is also impact-resistant. Despite continuous operation under these difficult conditions, they are designed so that industrial PCs have a long service life.
  • Scalable and modular: Industrial PCs often have a modular design so that they can be easily expanded with special interfaces or additional components that are required for special technology, robots or other machines.
  • Special software and hardware requirements: Powerful processors are a must for industrial servers to take on computationally intensive tasks such as automation or image processing. Finally, industrial PCs support specialized operating systems and software used in control and automation systems.
  • Versatile mounting options: Industrial PCs should or must be able to work in different environments. Rackmounting, wall mounting or DIN rail mounting are common options for installing industrial PCs at various locations in the production environment.

Various industrial PCs at Thomas-Krenn

Industrial PCs and industrial servers are usually used for specialized control and regulation tasks directly on site, for example in production. Similar to classic servers, they are also used centrally for network and data end applications, but must be able to withstand harsher environments. At Thomas-Krenn, we offer three different industrial PC systems, which we will discuss in more detail below.

The industrial mini servers from our LES series (Low Energy Systems) are used where compact dimensions, robustness and low power consumption are required. The industrial mini PCs meet moderate demands in terms of performance and storage capacity. The variety of LES models covers different requirements in terms of connectivity, performance and insulation from environmental influences. There are LES models with up to ten network interfaces, up to 3.4 terabytes of storage capacity and various energy-saving CPUs up to Intel Core i7. All our mini servers are passively cooled and protected against dirt particles. Some models are also water-protected and certified according to IP protection classes, which qualifies them for use in a wide range of industries.
If you need more space for expansion cards or higher computing power, a 19-inch industrial rack server is the right choice. Our industrial rack servers in 19-inch format are specially designed for efficient use in racks with limited space and have a compact installation depth. These industrial servers are equipped with dust and vibration protection to meet the requirements of harsh environments. Like all our industrial PCs, they are flexibly configurable and use durable server components. Models with two height units (U) offer an excellent price-performance ratio, while 4U systems offer plenty of space for expansion and additional storage options.
Panel PCs are used in industrial environments in a similar way to industrial servers, but have integrated displays. They are particularly suitable for controlling systems and visualizing production processes and are usually mounted in control panels or control desks. Our panel PCs offer particular flexibility thanks to the "Convertible Display System": the system consists of a touchscreen display with a computer unit that can be plugged into the back. This means that the PC hardware can be easily upgraded or replaced independently of the display. The front of the Panel PCs is dust and water resistant to IP65, while the computer unit is shock and vibration resistant.
