Software defined storage

Software Defined Storage SDS

The flexible solution for your IT environments

The mountains of data are constantly growing – but in most cases the IT budget isn’t. That is why an increasing number of companies are turning to software defined storage (SDS) and hyper-converged systems. These allow for scalable, high-performance and highly available solutions using affordable hardware.

Hardware and software as separate instances thanks to SDS

Although almost every manufacturer has its own definition of Software Defined Storage, there is an overarching principle: SDS separates the storage management services from the hardware, allowing expensive, highly specialized storage arrays to be replaced by inexpensive standard hardware.

As a rule, software-defined storage is combined with storage virtualization. All available storage hardware is assigned to a storage pool. This applies equally to internal hard disks, i.e. direct-attached storage (DAS) or storage area networks (SAN).

Increased performance, maximum scalability and lower hardware costs are within reach thanks to innovative technology. Software-based storage enables you to react quickly to varying capacity and performance requirements and is therefore ideal for users who value high flexibility. Modern methods such as erasure coding ensure maximum data security with comparatively high utilization of the gross capacities of the SSDs and HDDs, while also reducing the complexity of the hardware, for example by eliminating RAID controllers.

Thomas-Krenn – your partner for software-defined storage

Though software-defined storage and hyper-convergent systems are built using standard server hardware, the coordination of the components, such as SSDs, HDDs, controllers, network interfaces and switches is absolutely essential to the success of a project. Proven know-how with servers and a clear understanding of software-defined storage are therefore crucial when selecting the hardware manufacturer. Thomas-Krenn has acquired comprehensive experience with its internal use of SDS – as well as from its involvement in numerous customer projects – and is therefore the ideal hardware partner for your SDS project.

We have a wide range of SDS systems and work with renowned suppliers like Vmware and Microsoft to provide the best solutions for your IT infrastructure. With our VMware Virtual SAN (vSAN) Appliance or our Azure Stack HCI systems, a simplified entry into the world of software-defined storage is possible for IT departments of all sizes.

If you value high-quality hardware that has been carefully selected and comprehensively tested for use in software-defined storage or hyper-convergent systems, you will be very pleased with our systems.
