Virtualization

Virtualization

Opportunities and possibilities for your IT

Virtualization offers many advantages and is therefore becoming increasingly popular among businesses. It offers potential for considerable cost savings. After all, with fewer physical servers running, less energy is consumed and data centers can be downsized accordingly. Another advantage is hardware independence and high availability through functions such as live migration, storage migration and fault tolerance.
Do you want to virtualize your company's IT? All you need is a suitable server. You also need to choose a virtualization vendor.

Your customized virtualization solution

Depending on which enterprise applications you want to virtualize, there are several ways to use virtualization. One option is to virtualize servers. Especially for companies that operate dozens or hundreds of servers, this type of virtualization is worthwhile. Not only do operating and energy costs decrease, but the administrative and maintenance requirements are also reduced for existing servers. It is possible to virtualize the entire infrastructure – from servers to storage capacity and even network components. This means that only a few physical servers are needed and all others can run virtually.
Virtualizing servers therefore offers many advantages and almost always helps to save costs. The only exception is when the existing physical servers to be consolidated are running at high utilization. The key advantage of server virtualization is that consolidation to a few physical servers results in better utilization rates. However, if the server to be consolidated is already fully utilized, this advantage is lost.

Another virtualization option is to virtualize desktops. In this case, the user environment runs on a central infrastructure, but the user experience is unchanged. The major advantage of desktop virtualization is that full-featured client PCs are no longer needed; power-saving thin or zero clients are sufficient. Following an initial budget commitment, desktop virtualization quickly pays dividends and amortizes the investment after a short time. In addition to saving on fully equipped PCs and optimizing resources through shared hardware, desktop virtualization offers the opportunity to set up the host in a central location and save on time-consuming administrative work. The prerequisite for cost-saving desktop virtualization is that at least 50 workstations are consolidated. For smaller environments with fewer than 50 users, the cost savings are not significant; desktop virtualization is not economical in this case. A proven system for desktop virtualization is VMware Horizon. VMware Horizon enables quick and easy remote access to the virtual workstation and is therefore ideally suited as the basis for a home office solution.
Virtualization is worth it

As with all updates, virtualization requires an initial investment. Even if the initial costs seem high at first glance, one should keep in mind that virtualization generally pays for itself within a few years thanks to the resulting savings in management and hardware independence.

Virtualization is worth it, if:

  • There are resources that have not been used so far
  • Energy costs should be reduced
  • Fail-safety and high availability are priorities
  • Administrative effort should be reduced
