Each Windows Server license includes an unrestricted downgrade right. A downgrade allows the use of an older version of Windows Server. To make use of this downgrade right, the end customer needs a corresponding installation medium and an activation key. A downgrade kit contains exactly these two components. It should be noted that the edition must be either the same or lower. A higher edition may not be run.

Such a downgrade can useful, for example, if older applications are not supported by the 2022 version. This allows the latest version of the server OS to be licensed, but still run a technically compatible predecessor. This avoids stumbling blocks when migrating applications.
