Windows Server 2022 paves the way to the cloud, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. In conjunction with local infrastructure, the numerous hybrid functions of MS Azure support IT departments in the administration of their servers and enable targeted monitoring and analysis processes. This not only increases efficiency, but also reduces administration and management costs.

Windows Server 2022 has added numerous updates to the Windows Admin Center. These include improved VM management, a more user-friendly event viewer and other tweaks to convenience and performance. Otherwise, the optionally installable tool retains its usual strengths: multi-server management and Azure Cloud integration. The intuitive web interface allows reliable monitoring and location-independent access to all servers as well as the administration of hyper-converged systems and the relocation of workloads to the cloud or back.

Containers play a central role when rapidly deploying data in the cloud or on your own network. Microsoft has therefore revamped and expanded container support in Windows Server 2019. For example, the Server Core base container is now only one-third of its previous size – saving resources and reducing complexity. Linux and Windows containers can also be run in parallel. The server now also supports the Kubernetes container orchestration framework and can operate as a node in a Kubernetes environment.

This feature helps administrators with capacity planning and system monitoring. Using predictive analytics, machine learning algorithms make predictions about expected system utilization based on monitoring data. The special feature here is that the system works completely locally and is not dependent on a cloud connection. System Insights is extensible, allowing Microsoft and third-party vendors to improve the prediction methods and extend them to other server, storage and network parameters.

The Linux Subsystem for Windows (LSW) allows Linux distributions to be launched within Windows Server 2022. This makes it possible to unify the management of Windows and Linux servers on the network. LWS runs directly without virtualization. It therefore requires fewer resources and simplifies the handling of tools across different platforms, since Linux and Windows programs can access the same resources in parallel.

High availability and disaster recovery using Storage Replica was introduced in Windows Server 2016, but has only been included in the Standard Edition with limited functionality since WS2019. The feature has been further improved in Windows Server 2022.

Thanks to the latest updates for Storage Migration Services (SMS), migrating existing data is particularly easy in Windows Server 2022. Using the SMS role established in the previous version, it is possible to capture data and configuration from old Windows servers on the network and move them specifically to new servers or to the Azure cloud. The process is completely transparent for users and applications.
