OpenPOWER

Open source software has proven itself in enterprise use over the last two decades. Operating systems, virtualization solutions and critical enterprise applications like databases benefit from the open development model and the transparency it brings.

OpenPOWER systems now bring these advantages to the hardware side in the form of powerful servers. The open source developed OpenPOWER firmware is available for download on GitHub – meaning that the source code can be analyzed and viewed by independent parties.

POWER8

The 3.325 GHz POWER8 processor can handle up to 64 parallel hardware threads thanks to eight cores with 8x simultaneous multi-threading technology. The large caches (512 KB L2 and 8 MB eDRAM L3 cache per core, as well as 64 MB L4 cache in the four Centaur memory buffer chips) enhance the performance of resource-intensive applications like databases.
