This article describes the general function of the Network Data Management Protocol, also referred to as NDMP.

General information

NDMP serves as direct control of backup and recovery exercises with a storage system without having to transfer the data to a tape drive via backup server.

The following requirements are needed for the use of NDMP:

  1. a backup software that supports NDMP (NDMP Control)
  2. a tape drive that is connected directly to the storage system but can also receive control commands from the backup software.

The classic approach of transferring data from the storage system to a backup server and then to tape is now more common, as not every storage system supports NDMP. Unfortunately, NDMP has not really evolved in recent years.
