FAQs about the webinar Virtualization Comparison
In this article, you will find the answers for all questions that were asked in the webinar Virtualization Comparison- Proxmox VE - Microsoft - VMware by Broadcom
Q&A
Q: Do all Hyper-V "advantages" also function with Linux-VM?
A: The functional range of Hyper-V is not limited by the choice of the guest operating system
Q: What are your experiences with the performance of the various systems? In particular, the performance of Windows instances.
A: We did not carry out a comparison of the performance and can not make a statement
Q: Does Hyper-V WAC not count as a WebUI?
A: That is correct: The Windows Admin Center is a WebUI. However, WAC is an add-on product from Microsoft and is not available by default as it is with Proxmox VE.
Therefore: Yes, Hyper-V now also has a WebUI with Windows Admin Center, but you have to install it manually.
Q: What is the difference between Hyper-V and Azure Local?
A: These are two different operating systems - Hyper-V is the well-known hypervisor from Windows server and is completely offline-capable.
Azure Local is a separation of Windows server and does also use the Hyper-V functions (Hyper-V is also available as with Windows server), Azure Local is an Azure solution which can not be operated without Azure Cloud. To get a better overview, i recommend our past Azure Local/Azure Stack HCI vs Windows server webinars.
Q: What about the scalability of the solutions and from which point does it make sense to think about, for example, OpenStack? Especially: There is a maximum number of nodes in the cluster and how easy/quick is it to expand the cluster to make available new hardware resources.
A: All solutions have limitations in terms of hardware and node selection.
Q: Snapshots at Proxmox with SAN (iSCSI, FC)?
A: Since version 9.0, snapshots with iSCSI are possible. There is also an opportunity with Fibre-Channel for snapshots von Thick-Provisioned LVM Storages. View: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Roadmap.
Q:Can the products presented on slide 3 (core functions) be administered using automation tools (terraform, opentofu, etc.)?
A: Proxmox VE can be administrated with the named tools. We can not make a statement about the other solutions.
Q: Is it possible to move VMs between hypervisors and which tools are available for this?
A: Yes, a migration between all hypervisors is possible. Depending on the source and target system as well as on the type of workloads, there are different opportunities of the migration. If you want to make a change, ask for advice. We ourselves do not offer such a service, but we have a large network of partners.
Q: Overcommitment
We noticed with HyperV that although you can allocate more resources, the VMs no longer start because “too little RAM” is available, even though it is not fully utilized. What exactly is the situation at Microsoft? You just said that it was possible.
A:You have to differ between CPU Overcommitment and RAM Overcommitment:
CPU cores can also be overcommitted by a factor of 100. However, this is only recommended in moderation, as the system will eventually become very sluggish.
RAM cannot be overcommitted by a single byte; the hypervisor reserves a few GB for its own use, and the rest can be distributed among the VMs. When a VM is started, the system checks whether sufficient RAM is available. If this is not the case, the VM will not start.
