Veeam backup edition differences
Veeam Backup software is an application to secure virtual and physical workloads in company networks. The use of this software in your company requires a license. This article provides an overview of the license packages and its features.
Veeam data platform
Since April 1st, 2023, Veeam summarizes its product range in the area of safety & restoration, monitoring and orchestration under the name Veeam Data Platform (VDP).[1] The following table provides an overview of the VDP editions and the products contained therein.

Veeam Universal License
Even before the introduction of VDP, Veeam also changed its licensing model. The Veeam Universal Licenses (VUL) authorize the use of the corresponding software based on the data to be secured and monitored workloads. The licenses are transferable between workloads.
VULs have a minimum purchase quantity of 10 licenses.
VDP Essentials is an exception: Bundles with 5 licenses are possible, but only a maximum of 50 workloads can be licensed for this purpose.[7]
| Workload |
Number | License |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual machine | 1 | 1 |
| Cloud-VM | 1 | 1 |
| Enterprise application | 1 | 1 |
| NAS/File share | 500 GB | 1 |
| Workstation / end point | 3 | 1 |
Duration
VULs can be aquired as subscription license or perpetual license.
- A subscription license includes a right of use and the associated support (standard "Production", optional "Premier") and update and upgrade rights for a fixed period of 1, 3, or 5 years. When a subscription expires, you are no longer authorized to use the software.
- A perpetual license includes an unlimited right of use. Support (standard "Production", optional "Premier") and update and upgrade rights for a period of one year are included with the purchase of such a license. An extension of support and update and upgrade rights can be purchased at a later date.[7]
Perpetual licenses are available for VDP-packages Essentials, Foundation and Advanced.
Veeam BaaS and DRaaS
Veeam Backup as a Service (BaaS) and Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) are managed cloud services. These can be booked optionally from managed service providers (such as Thomas-Krenn.AG).
More products
In addition to VDP, Veeam offers other standalone backup products for applications that run natively in the cloud, namely
- Veeam backup for Microsoft 365
- Veeam backup for Salesforce
- Veeam backup for Kubernetes / Kasten K10.
Unlike VDP, these products are licensed exclusively on a subscription basis per user or worker node (in the case of Box K10).
Licensing
The following table provides an overview of the subscription licenses:[7]
| Term in years | user |
Limitation | Support | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 | 1 / 3 / 5 | at least 10 |
- | default: production optional: premier |
| Salesforce | 1 / 3 / 5 | at least 10 | 100% Salesforce users must be licensed | default: production optional: premier |
| Kasten K10 | 1 / 3 / 5 | at least 1 worker node | - | - |
Support
Veeam offers 4 support models: Evaluation, Standard, Production and Premier.[2]
The evaluation support is granted during the trial period of a Veeam product.
Standard support is no longer available since the introduction of VDP. When using a VDP product, you always purchase production support as well.
Premier Support is characterized by the assistance of a Support Account Manager (SAM).
An overview:
| Service | Evaluation | Standard | Production | Premier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product updates | - | yes | yes | yes |
| Product upgrades | - | yes | yes | yes |
| Technical support | telephone / Internet | telephone / Internet | telephone / Internet | telephone / Internet / SAM |
