Supermicro X11DPi-NT NIC Firmware Update
The Supermicro X11DPi-NT Mainboard provides over two GBit/s onboard network interfaces (Intel X722 NIC with X557 Physical Layer Chip). In this article, we show you how to update the firmware of both onboard network interfaces via UEFI shell.
Firmware before update
The following NIC firmware version is installed on the mainboard before the update:
- firmware-version: 3.33 0x80000e48 1.1876.0
root@debian11:~# ethtool -i eno1 driver: i40e version: 5.10.0-10-amd64 firmware-version: 3.33 0x80000e48 1.1876.0 expansion-rom-version: bus-info: 0000:60:00.0 supports-statistics: yes supports-test: yes supports-eeprom-access: yes supports-register-dump: yes supports-priv-flags: yes root@debian11:~#
The following firmware was installed on the test system in an intermediate step:
- firmware-version: 4.11 0x80001da4 1.2527.0 (DPINT301_NUP Update Paket)
Firmware update
The firmware update (DPINT3A1_NUP in this example) can be installed via UEFI shell or Linux. The following pictures show the update via UEFI shell:
-
The mainboard in the test is provided with BIOS version 3.6. Plug a USB stick with the firmware update into the server.
-
Select the UEFI Shell to start it.
-
The UEFI Shell shows the available drives.
-
Switch with fs0: on the USB stick.
-
The command dir shows the files of the USB stick.
-
Start the update with FWUpdate.nsh.
-
The update starts.
-
Flash update started.
-
OROM update started.
-
PHY NVM update started.
-
Update completed.
-
Restart the system with reset.
Hint:
- Depending on the previous firmware version, the update process may need to be performed again. There are hints for this in this file: Release Note.txt.
Firmware after update
After the update, the following NIC firmware version is installed on the mainboard:
- 5.50 0x800032e8 1.3082.0
root@pve:~# uname -a Linux pve 5.15.30-2-pve #1 SMP PVE 5.15.30-3 (Fri, 22 Apr 2022 18:08:27 +0200) x86_64 GNU/Linux root@pve:~# ethtool -i eno1 driver: i40e version: 5.15.30-2-pve firmware-version: 5.50 0x800032e8 1.3082.0 expansion-rom-version: bus-info: 0000:60:00.0 supports-statistics: yes supports-test: yes supports-eeprom-access: yes supports-register-dump: yes supports-priv-flags: yes root@pve:~# ethtool -i eno2 driver: i40e version: 5.15.30-2-pve firmware-version: 5.50 0x800032e8 1.3082.0 expansion-rom-version: bus-info: 0000:60:00.1 supports-statistics: yes supports-test: yes supports-eeprom-access: yes supports-register-dump: yes supports-priv-flags: yes root@pve:~#
lspci
The lspci command shows the following details for both onboard NICs:
