In the past, Office 365 was easier to manage. At that time, there was only Office 365 in various levels. However, Microsoft then took the step of combining the Office packages into a complete solution with a number of additional features and naming the new product Microsoft 365. However, the "old" Office 365 is still available, but with a smaller range of functions. In addition to the two categories already mentioned, there is a third: Microsoft 365 Business. Depending on the version, certain additional features from the Microsoft 365 Enterprise range may also be included here.

In general, M365 licenses can be assigned in the following categories:
- Microsoft 365 Business (companies< 300 employees): Microsoft 365 Business Plans
- Microsoft 365 Enterprise: Microsoft 365 Enterprise Plans
- Office 365 Enterprise: Office 365 Enterprise Plans
The Microsoft 365 Enterprise contains the complete "Office 365 Enterprise"-package and includes a number of Enterprise Security + Mobility and Windows Features.
