Deactivation of automatic updates under Windows server 2025
Automatic Windows updates can cause unwanted restarts or failures on servers. In this article, we explain how to deactivate automatic updates under Windows server 2025.
Methods
There are two possibilities for avoiding automatic updates of Windows:
- deactivate the service
- settings via group policy
Both methods are explained in the following.
Services
The easiest method is the deactivation via services:
-
The program "services" is opened via Windows search.
-
The subitem "Windows updates" is called up.
-
After this, select "Manual" under "Start type".
-
The settings must be adopted.
-
By clicking on "OK", the window is closed again.
Group policy
Another possibility to avoid automatic updates of Windows is the procedure via group policy.
-
The group policy is opened via Windows settings.
-
Administrative template is chosen.
-
Windows components are chosen.
-
Windows update is chosen.
-
End user interface is called up.
-
Configure automatic updates is chosen.
-
Automatic updates can be deactivated here.
Hint for manual update control
The deactivation of automatic Windows updates may be reasonable in server environments to avoid unplanned restarts or business interruptions. Please note that safety-relevant updates must be performed manually and installed on a regular basis to maintain the system security.
