Configuration and activation of SMTP in ASMB

From Thomas-Krenn-Wiki

This article is about the SMTP-dispatch (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) and how to activate, configure and set up email notifications correctly in the Web-GUI of the ASUS ASMB11-iKVM.

Requirements

  • SMTP-server that functions
  • ASUS-mainboard with integrated ASMB-module
  • network access on the BMC-websurface

In the following example, an internal SMTP-server without user-authentification is used.

User administration

A valid recipient address must be stored for at least one user before SMTP can be used. Only then, notifications can be delivered.

SMTP-settings

After the user rights have been set, the SMTP-parameters can be configured for the mail dispatch.

Hint: If the SMTP-server requires an authentification (SASL / STARTTLS), a certificate must be provided. Some ASMB-versions only support encrypted SMTP (Port 25).

Filter for notifications

Suitable event-filters must be installed so that the ASMB knows for which events it has to send emails.

Summary

The email notifications can be easily activated via SMTP in the ASMB-module:

  • user must possess a valid recipient address
  • SMTP-server data must be entered correctly
  • configure event-filter and LAN-destinations
  • send test mail to verify functions

Multiple users / different recipients

The ASMB-module enables to save users with the own email address. This allows the following:

  • Administrators receive general system notifications
  • Technicians only receive hardware referred alert notifications
  • Monitoring-systems receive automatized error reports

This enables a defined, targeted and role-based notification.

Troubleshooting of SMTP-problems

The following aspects should be verified, if no test email arrives:

  • blocked firewall / SMTP-port?
  • user without email address→ dispatch generally fails
  • SMTP-authentification necessary? → certificate may be required
  • DNS-problems? → Better to enter mailserver via IP on a trial basis
  • event filter disabled or incorrectly configured
  • verify event log under Server Health → Event Log
  • test SMTP-connection manually (see Test TCP Port 25 (smtp) access with telnet)
