In VirtualBox, you can operate 64 Bit guest systems. In this article, we describe the necessary requirements.

64 Bit guests

VirtualBox supports guest systems with 64 Bit starting from version 2.0. Since version 2.1, you can also operate 64 bit guest systems if VirtualBox runs on a 32 bit operating system.

Requirements for 64 bit guests:[1]

  1. You require a 64 bit CPU with hardware virtualization support (Intel-VT or AMD-V).

Furthermore, the support in the BIOS must be activated - view Activating the Intel VT Virtualization Feature.[2]

  1. You have to activate hardware virtualisation for the affected VM. VirtualBox does not support software virtualization for 64 bit guests.
  2. If you want to use 64 bit guest systems on a 32 bit operating system, you have to confirm this in VirtualBox (since running 64-bit guests on 32-bit operating systems causes additional overhead).
