Proxmox VE USB installation media
The most convenient way to install Proxmox VE is via a USB flash drive. This article will show you how to prepare one using Linux or Windows.
Download ISO Image
Download the ISO image from the following page:
Prepare USB flash drive
The USB memory stick must be at least 2 GB in size and must not contain any important data, as the stick will be overwritten with the ISO image in the following steps.
Create USB flash drive using Linux
Copy the ISO image to the USB stick using the dd command. Replace proxmox-ve_VERSION.iso with the exact name of the downloaded ISO image and replace /dev/sdX with the device name of the USB flash drive:
$ sudo dd if=Downloads/proxmox-ve_VERSION.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=1M conv=fdatasync
The following example shows the copying of proxmox-ve_8.2-1.iso to the USB stick /dev/sda (in the laptop used, an NVME SSD is used for the operating system, in this case the USB stick has /dev/sda as the device name):
werner@x390:~$ sudo dd if=Downloads/proxmox-ve_8.2-1.iso of=/dev/sda bs=1M conv=fdatasync 1331+1 records in 1331+1 records out 1395881984 bytes (1,4 GB, 1,3 GiB) copied, 51,8515 s, 26,9 MB/s
Create USB flash drive using Windows
You can use the following programs to create the USB flash drive under Windows:
- Etcher: https://etcher.io/
- Rufus: https://rufus.ie/ (use the DD mode when creating)
Install Proxmox VE
You can then install Promox VE on the desired target system:
