TrueNAS release notes
TrueNAS (formerly FreeNAS) is currently available in version 12 and is now based on FreeBSD 12.1. This article lists the TrueNAS Core changes and requirements. Information about TrueNAS-compatible systems from Thomas-Krenn is shown in the article Open Storage Systems (OSS).
Compatible hardware
Since TrueNAS Core 12 is based on FreeBSD 12.1, you can use the FreeBSD hardware notes as a guide for selecting components.[1]
Restriction: FreeNAS only supports 64-bit CPUs.[2]
Changelog
TrueNAS Core uses a rolling release model instead of point releases. Updates can be conveniently imported via the integrated update function. This section lists the currently available versions of TrueNAS Core and formerly FreeNAS with the most important changes and features.
TrueNAS 12.0 U3
The third update to TrueNAS 12.0 was released on 13.04.2021.[3]
TrueNAS 12.0 U2
The second update to TrueNAS 12.0 was released on 09.02.2021.[4]
TrueNAS 12.0 U1
The first update to TrueNAS 12.0 was released on 09.12.2020.[5]
TrueNAS 12.0
TrueNAS 12.0 was released on 20.10.2020. It was thus a change from FreeNAS to TrueNAS Core 12 completed.[6]

- Major changes to the ZFS filesystem (Open ZFS 2.0 or also called ZFS on Linux).
- ZFS Native Crypto
- 2 factor authentication
- Performance improvements (SMB, iSCSI, ZFS & more)
- VPN Support (TrueNAS can act as OpenVPN server or client)
- Fusion Pool Support (Allflash vdevs for metadata or IO with small block sizes) (accelerates HDDs)
FreeNAS 11.1 U3
The third update to FreeNAS 11.1 was released on 19.03.2018.[7]
- Adjustments and bug fixes in the following areas:
- Samba has been patched to address CVE-2018-1050 and CVE-2018-1057.
FreeNAS 11.1 U2
The update U2 was released on 20.02.2018.[8]
- Adjustments and bug fixes in the following areas:
- System Update has been removed from the Console Setup Menu.
- ZFS Sync write synchronization settings have been added to Create Dataset and Create zvol.
- Midnight Commander has been updated to version 4.8.20.
FreeNAS 11.1 U1
The first update to FreeNAS 11.1 was released on 18.01.2018.[9]
- Adjustments and bug fixes in the following areas:
- RancherOS has been updated to version 1.1.3.
- Smartmontools has been updated to 6.6.
- The Factory Restore button in System ‣ General has been renamed to Reset Configuration to Defaults.
FreeNAS 11.1
FreeNAS 11.1 was published on 13.12.2017.[10] This version is a feature release, it contains new functions as well as numerous bugfixes and improvements.

FreeNAS 11.0
FreeNAS 11.0 was published on 14.06.2017.[12] This major version is a feature release, it contains numerous new functions, bug fixes and a new user interface.

- New user interface, currently beta
- New virtualization features: bhyve
- New S3-compatible Object Storage Service
- Notification service
- Sending critical messages to various applications
- Supports e.g. Slack, PagerDuty, AWS, Hipchat, InfluxDB, Mattermost, OpsGenie and VictorOps
- Improved services menu
