Most plug-in cards (e.g. RAID controller, network cards) are available in a so-called Low Profile version. These cards only have the half installation height and can be assembled without an additional riser card at 2 U servers. If you use 64 bit plug-in cards, then these onl can achive their maximum performance in a 64 bit slot. If a 64 bit plug-in card is used in connection with a 32 bit riser card, performance halves. Due to the arrangement of the slots, at special mainboards (e.g. Intel Torrey Pines) only 32 bit riser cards can be assembled. Systems with Low Profile cards so offer a mainboard-independent maximum performance and are more cost-effective as servers with riser card.
We recommend: Always use a Low Profile card. Riser cards are only necessary if the desired plug-in card is not available as Low Profile variant.
Low Profile systems
ideal performance at 64 bit cards and lower costs as riser card systems
