Thomas-Krenn.AG and SUSE present first appliances for SUSE Enterprise Storage 2
Amsterdam (SUSECon) and Freyung, Nov 3, 2015 - To coincide with the launch of the second generation of SUSE Enterprise Storage today at SUSECon, SUSE and Thomas-Krenn.AG are announcing the availability of three hardware appliances for SUSE Enterprise Storage 2. These high-performance systems, universally applicable with an attractive price-performance ratio, stem from a close collaboration between SUSE and Thomas-Krenn.AG in the field of software defined storage (SDS).
These are the first complete appliances in the world that make open-source based SDS available for heterogeneous environments, such as Windows or VMware-based hosts. All three appliances are available as complete packages comprising of hardware, subscriptions for SUSE Enterprise Storage 2 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, hardware support from Thomas-Krenn.AG, software support from SUSE, installation support and consulting.
"More and more midmarket companies recognise the value of Software Defined Storage as a remedy for their exploding storage costs", says Dr. David Hoeflmayr, CEO of independent German server manufacturer Thomas-Krenn.AG. "We are excited about the opportunity to be the first to market with a series of SDS Appliances based on SUSE Enterprise Storage 2. SUSE Engineers and our own staff joined forces and worked hard to develop a series of thoroughly tested, cost effective turnkey SDS offerings for midmarket customers. From entry level to performance- or capacity-optimised solutions, they push the limits of both SUSE Enterprise Storage 2 and our hardware. They will give our customers more choice and flexibility, combined with the outstanding resilience offered by SUSE Enterprise Storage."
“This offering sends a clear signal that the market is ready for open-source based Software Defined Storage in almost all industries”, adds Nils Brauckmann, President and General Manager of SUSE. “Medium-sized businesses in particular are rightly demanding resilient, fully-tested complete solutions. Together with the technicians at Thomas-Krenn.AG, our engineers and consultants have worked hard on this and are now ready to deliver. Our partner not only builds reliable hardware and is known for its intensive system tests, but Thomas-Krenn.AG also has deep Ceph know-how which benefits this joint project and in turn our customers.”
The SUSE Enterprise Storage appliances from Thomas-Krenn.AG are designed to cover the greatest possible number of application cases which demand scalable, high availability storage. The “All-rounder” represents the entry-level offering. In this instance, the cluster has a total capacity of 3.2 TB in SSDs and 64 TB in hard disks. The “Performance-Optimised” version is a flash-only system with 19.2 TB of flash storage, the “Capacity-Optimised” version has a capacity of 4 TB in flash and 304 TB of HDD storage, and all three systems consist of four Ceph nodes of which three serve as equal monitoring nodes. iSCSI gateways to the public network also allow for the use of Windows or VMware hosts. An internal 10 GB cluster network connects the nodes to one another, while doubled available switches ensure redundancy. Intel DC S3710 type enterprise class modules, which are designed for long service life with massive write access and for high performance, are used exclusively as the SSDs. The boards for the nodes are each fitted with two 8-core Xeon CPUs (E5-2630v3).
The operating system, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12, is hosted in a SATA DOM (disk on module) on the server board in each node so that the full number of slots are available for the cluster.
