PCIe 3.0 and DDR4 support
The new Skylake Intel Xeon E3-1200v5 processors stand out with many improved features: Compared to the previous Haswell architecture, the new Skylake CPUs are substantially more efficient and support PCI Express 3.0. Up to 16 PCI lanes are possible while 10 USB 3.0 ports can be used with the new technology – allowing for even greater performance.
Thanks to four-core processors with up to 64 GB of RAM, up to eight threads can be simultaneously used depending on the model. Maximum memory bandwidth currently tops out at 34.1 GB/s, though higher clock speeds at lower voltages will be possible with the new support for DDR4. Intel’s new microarchitecture provides a notable performance improvement while the new Skylake servers also use considerably less energy than predecessor models.
Future-ready Skylake microarchitecture
Intel presented the new microarchitecture in August 2015 – the final CPU series that Intel is releasing according to the “tick-tock model”. In this model, the chip manufacturer alternated the focus for its new CPUs between new processor technologies and new microarchitectures at regular intervals. “Tick” processors had smaller die shrinks than their predecessors. As a “tock” model, Skylake shares the same 14nm die shrink as its predecessor Broadwell, but boasts significantly more energy-efficiency and performance.
