VMware ESXi 5.1 and 5.5 show UNCONFIGURED GOOD for configured drives of LSI RAID Controllers
VMware ESXi 5.1 and 5.5 show the status information UNCONFIGURED GOOD for configured drives of LSI RAID Controllers on the Health Status page. This is a display issue.
Update on ESXi 5.1: the problem was resolved by VMware with the ESXi 5.1 Update 3 (12/04/2014).
Update on ESXi 5.5: the problem was resolved by VMware with the ESXi 5.5 Update 3 (09/16/2015).
Problem
Physical drives, which are part of a RAID volume, are still displayed as UNCONFIGURED GOOD:
Affected Systems
We have seen this issue with the following server configuration:
- VMware ESXi 5.5 U1 (VMware vSphere 5.5)
- LSI MegaRAID 9271-4i with Firmware 23.28.0-0010 (MR 5.10)
- LSI CIM Provider 500.04.V0.37-0006, 500.04.V0.38-0006, and 500.04.V0.51-0002
- LSI drivers scsi-megaraid-sas 6.602.54.00-1OEM.550.0.0.1198610 and 6.603.55.00-1OEM.500.0.0.472560
We saw this issue also with VMware ESXi 5.1. We did not observe this issue with ESXi 5.0 and a LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i controller (see the screenshots in the article Changing the language used by vSphere Client).
State
- State as of June, 11th 2014: We reported this issue to LSI. In case of any new information, we will update this article.
- State as of February, 11th 2015: Problem is resolved for ESXi 5.1 with the ESXi 5.1 Update 3.
- State as of September, 17th 2015: Problem is resolved for ESXi 5.5 with the ESXi 5.5 Update 3.
Workaround
You can use the storcli or the MegaRAID Storage Manager as a workaround until a solution for this problem is available.
Both tools show the correct status information for those physical drives. Here is the output of storcli as an example:
/opt/lsi/storcli # ./storcli /c0 show Generating detailed summary of the adapter, it may take a while to complete.
