In addition to a direct communication between a SAS controller and SAS/SATA devices, the Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) protocol allows the use of so-called SAS Expanders. Like switches of an Ethernet network, SAS expanders enable you to connect a larger number of devices (more SAS/SATA devices to a single SAS controller).[1]
