Use of the server
Please follow all instructions strictly to prevent any hazard or impairment of your own health as well as damage to the server or individual components.
The maintenance of a server, in particular the exchange of server components must only be done by authorized and technically qualified staff.
The range of use is limited to typical IT environments. Usage in special environments such as medical facilities is not envisaged.
The location of your server
Thomas Krenn Server-Transit recommends the installation of the server in an air conditioned server room. Select a location which meets the following criteria:
- Clean, dry and free of particles in the air (except normal room dust).
- Not close to shock or vibration sources.
- Shielded against strong electromagnetic fields produced by electrical devices.
- In thunder storm prone areas you should use a surge protector for the server.
- A properly grounded wall outlet must be available.
- Sufficient space for access to the network cables because they are the main method to disconnect the server from the power supply.
Before any maintenance work
- Perform a backup.
- Verify that the restoration of data works.
- Perform any maintenance work.
Before you open the housing
- Disconnect the server from the power supply.
- Use a grounding cable or gloves for exchanging sensitive components.
Warnings concerning voltage and electricity
- By pressing the power button marked with a standby symbol the system is not completely disconnected from the mains. To disconnect the system completely from the power supply, the power cord must be unplugged from the outlet. The system may have more than one power cord. Make sure that all power cords are unplugged.
- When you install or restore components which are not hot-plug-capable, make sure that all cables are unplugged.
- Do not alter the power cords and do not use cables that are not consistent with the type required. Each power supply in the system must be connected via a separate power cord.
- Some power supplies use neutral conductor fuses. Caution should be applied when dealing with power supplies which use neutral conductor fuses to reduce the risk of electric shock.
- Power supplies do not contain any parts that require maintenance by the user.
- Do never open the power supply unit as there can be hazardous voltages, currents and energy sources. Return the unit to the producers for maintenance.
- If you exchange a hot-plug-compatible power supply, unplug its power cord before you extract it from the server.
Warnings for system access
- Turn off all peripheral devices connected to the product.
- Turn off the system using the power switch.
- Disconnect the device from the power source by removing all power cords from the system or from the socket.
- Keep all screws and other fasteners in a safe place after you have removed the housing cover. When you have finished your work in the interior of the system, re-attach the cover using the original screws or fastening elements.
- Turn off the server and unplug all power cords before expanding components which are not hot-plug-cabable.
- When you exchange a hot-plug-capable power supply, unplug its power cord before extracting it from the server.
Protect yourself from burns!
- When your server was in operation, the installed processors or coolers could be hot. If you you do not install or remove hot-plug components, please wait with removing the covers until the system has cooled down. Take care when installing or removing hot-plug components and avoid contact with hot components.
Exchange of hot-swap or hot-plug components.
- Be very careful when handling components which can be replaced during operation. Avoid touching electrical parts and electronic components.
Beware of moving parts!
- Do not touch the rotating fan blades, in order to avoid injuries. If the system has a fan coverage, it must not be operated without this cover.
Warnings concerning racks
- The equipment rack must be anchored on a suitable, solid ground to avoid tipping over when a server or other devices are removed. When installing the rack follow the instructions of the rack manufacturer.
- When you install devices in the rack always begin at the bottom. Always install the heaviest device in the lowest position of the rack.
- Always only extract one unit from the rack.
- Make sure to have only one network switch for the entire rack unit. This network switch must be easy to find and has to be marked clearly to indicate that it is the power cable for the entire unit and not only for the servers.
- The rack and all installed devices must be grounded in order to avoid electic shock.
Important notes on electrostatic discharge (ESD)
- Electrostatic discharges can cause damage of hard drives, circuit boards and other components. All maintenance work should be carried out on an ESD-workstation. If an ESD-workstation is not available, protection against electrostatic discharge can be achieved by wearing an antistatic cuff, which can be attached to any unpainted metallic object of your computer housing in order to provide grounding while you work.
- Take intensive care when handling circuit boards. They are very sensitive to electrostatic discharges. Touch circiut boards on the edge only.
- Put the circuit boards after unpacking from the protective casing or after extracting them from the server on a grounded, on a static discharge base, the building element side facing upwards. We recommend use of a conductible foam plastic base, but not the protective casing of the circuit board.
- Do not pull the circuit board across any surface.
Battery exchange
- Faultily exchanging batteries can cause danger of explosion.
- As a replacement, only use the battery recommended by the device manufacturer.
- When disposing of the battery please regard regulations for environmental protection.
- Do not attempt to load or open the battery.
Cooling and air flow
- Install all cables accuratly and according to the instructions to avoid blockage of air flow and cooling problems. To guarantee correct cooling and air flow, only operate the system with the appropriate cover attached. Operating the system without cover can lead to damage of components. To re-attach the cover follow these steps:
- Make sure that you did not forget any instruments in the housing.
- Check that all cables, extension-cards or other components are attached correctly.
- Attach the cover to the case of the product, following the product instructions
