Dieser Artikel liefert Hintergrundinformationen zu SMASH (Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware). SMASH kann als Kommandozeilenerweiterung zu IPMI betrachtet werden und wurde im Jahr 2005 von der DMTF spezifiziert. Bisher hat sich SMASH noch nicht so verbreitet wie IPMI. Dennoch wollen wir hier einige Informationen dazu zusammenfassen.

SMASH
Kurzerklärung SMASH:[1]
- Think of SMASH, then, as the scriptable interface to IPMI inside the box. It is a more recent development than IPMI, and it enables administrators to use a consistent command-line interface for server monitoring and management tasks in heterogeneous server environments. The DMTF released this command-line protocol (CLP) standard in June 2005 to address the lack of command-line consistency in management and monitoring information in heterogeneous server environments.

In-Band und Out-Of-Band
In-Band Management arbeitet mit der Unterstützung von Hardware-Kompontenten die vom Betriebssystem verwendet werden. Ein Beispiel ist hier ein Netzwerkinterface, das vom Betriebssystem verwedet wird.
Out-Of-Band arbeitet mit Komponenten, die vom Betriebssystem unabhängig sind. Ein Beispiel hier ist ein Service Processor oder Baseboard Management Controller.
SM CLP
Systems Management Command Line Protocol (SM CLP)
MAP
Ein Manageability Access Point (MAP) ist ein Netzwerkdienst zur Verwaltung eines sogenannten Managed System. Ein solcher MAP kann z.B. ein Management Process (der am Server im Betriebssystem läuft) oder auch ein Service Processor sein.
